A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal

Solutions

1. “A slumber did my spirit seal,” says the poet. That is, a deep sleep ‘closed off’ his soul (or mind). How does the poet react to his loved one’s death? Does he feel bitter grief? Or does he feel a great peace?
The poet says that his mind was in a deep emotional sleep when his loved one was alive, and he never imagined that she could die. After her death, he does not express loud sorrow or bitterness. Instead, he feels a calm and silent sadness mixed with acceptance. The poet seems peaceful because he believes that she is now free from pain, fear, and the effects of time. His reaction shows quiet grief rather than intense mourning.

2. The passing of time will no longer affect her, says the poet. Which lines of the poem say this?
The lines that show that time no longer affects her are:
“She seemed a thing that could not feel
The touch of earthly years.”
These lines mean that after death, she is beyond ageing, suffering, or the changes caused by time.

3. How does the poet imagine her to be, after death? Does he think of her as a person living in a very happy state (a ‘heaven’)? Or does he see her now as a part of nature? In which lines of the poem do you find your answer?
The poet imagines her not as living in heaven but as becoming a part of nature itself. He feels that she has merged with the natural world and now moves along with the earth. This idea is expressed in the lines:
“Rolled round in earth’s diurnal course
With rocks, and stones, and trees.”
These lines show that she has become one with nature, sharing eternal peace with the earth and its natural elements.
